What materials do you need?
Before we start, let's make sure you have everything ready:
- Watercolour paper, preferably in the format you have in mind for your card, I usually use A6
- Watercolour paints and brushes
- Letter stamps and ink pad
- Water glass and cloth
Cactus motif
You can find this motif in the small and big Template set flowers and plants.
Choose a watercolour motif
Which motif suits the occasion of the card? I like to keep it simple and plain. Remember to leave a space for the stamped text.
No idea? Take a look at my templates in the shop. They are perfect for you as a beginner. Most of the templates can also be used as cards. Don't be afraid to be creative with the templates, use only part of the motif, combine or rearrange elements. There are no limits to your creativity. You are welcome to try out this free template .
Watercolour painting for beginners
If you're not yet familiar with watercolour painting, don't worry! Here you'll find information, tips and tricks to help you get started:
Combination with letter stamps
Once your watercolour motif has dried, you can add your personal text. Choose matching letter stamps and stamp your message on your card.
If you haven't done this before, try it on a separate sheet of paper first so that you get the spacing of the letters right. It is also important that the corners of the stamps are not coloured so that they don't end up on the paper. My tip: instead of pressing the stamps onto the ink pad, I just brush them lightly over it. Before I stamp, I check that the whole letter has colour. If a corner also got colour, I carefully clean it with some paper.
Extra tip: round corners
Add that certain something to your cards by rounding off the corners. This small but effective detail gives your DIY creations a charming touch and makes them real eye-catchers. My favourite tool for this is this corner punch. I've been using it for so long and wouldn't want to miss it.
Flowers
You can find this motif also in the small and big Template set flowers and plants.
Personalise with your own ideas
Now you've got the basics down! Experiment with different colour combinations, motifs and stamp texts. Turn every card into a unique work of art!
